I won’t say “you heard it here first” as the interwebs are all a buzzing with the latest news released by the CEO.
In case you weren’t on unlimited this month, and didn’t get the email, that option is now GONE. Please enjoy some screenshots of people raging out below…
For the past few months, I’ve shied away from promoting Classpass on this site. My frustration with the rate hike a few months ago–from $99 to $145 monthly–made me decide that I should no longer be an evangelist (for free) for a company that clearly doesn’t care about customer loyalty. Case in point–a few months after I stuck it out with the new rate hike, my co-worker who had cancelled her membership was offered a deal to come back at the old price for three months! However, I knew that at 30+ classes a month, I was making the most out of a service that allowed me schedule flexibility, access while traveling, and a good change to my routine.
I can’t tell if they are hemorrhaging money or dying for new members or what, but their business decisions have been downright wonky. Despite HIKING up loyal users fees, they started offering $19 trials and free classes to bring friends to. Clearly, this was a business plan that would not work. Now, they are doing away with unlimited entirely. I’m so interested to see how many people jump ship, especially if they had the same thoughts as I did about the rate hikes. There is no justification that I can think of to pay $95/month. For someone that works out daily, if not more, 10 classes a month will not be sufficient for me as my sole workout option. They attempted to placate people by letting them start at 20 classes per month for the first three months after the change, but people online are NOT having it. I would not recommend this service to any friend. As far as a recommendation for Classpass? Grandfather in loyal members. It is what everyone is clamoring for, and probably would have been a better next step. As far as a business suggestion–pivot. They’ve spent a lot of time on their app. If I were their CEO, I’d use it as a tool to try and compete with MindBody which is a piece of crap I have 20 different log ins for anyways.
So, now I need to crowd source. I want to join a local gym when the 20 classes/month ends in 3 months. Anyone have any recommendations? I have a gym at work, but I’m looking for a place with good classes. So far I’ve heard 24 hour fitness, Chuze Fitness, Crunch, La Jolla Sports Club, and Point Loma Sports Club. Any others? Any comments on these ones?
